Charity Red Square Bike Ride 2009

On 30th August 2009 a ceremonial finish of Charity Red Square Bike Ride in favour of children with Down syndrome took place in Vasilievsly Spousk, Red Square. The bike ride was held in the framework of the Year of Equal Opportunities.

The event organiser is Downside Up Charity Fund that has since 1997 operated the Early Intervention Centre which provides free of charge psychological, pedagogical and social support to families raising children with Down syndrome. At present the Early Intervention Centre helps more than 1200 families from Moscow, other Russian regions and CIS countries.

The 170 professional and non-professional bikers acted as sponsors – not only did they fight through every challenge of the 100 km route along the Moscow region, but also contributed 6 mln rubles to benefit early intervention programmes for children with Down syndrome. The first persons to break the tape in Vasilievsky Spousk were Sergey Ivanov, a six-fold champion of Russia, Katyusha team member, Amstel Gold Race and Tour de France stages winner, Andrey Vostrikov, a youth with Down syndrome, an all-round world champion in gymnastics among disabled children, a gold medal winner at Special Olympic World Games in Shanghai, and Miss Russia team headed by Miss Vice-Universe Vera Krassova.

About 500 fans and supporters showed up in Red Square to greet the bikers. There were Downside Up pupils and their families, government representatives and Moscow government officials, major company executives, celebrities and journalists. The medals and prizes were awarded by singers Vlad Topalov and Olga Orlova and TV presenter and radio host Tutta Larsen, who was the bike ride’s master of ceremony..
