On 29^th May, Saturday, the first Charity Run in aid of children with Down syndrome was held on Vorobievy Gory, Moscow. More than 100 people from 15 countries: Russia, Malaysia, the USA, Canada, Israel, Turkey, etc. participated in the event. Business people from companies, private individuals, students, and parents with little children in prams took part in 1, 3 and 5 km races to support children with Down syndrome.

It was Downside Up’s first charity run, so at first we had certain misgivings and concerns, as it rained for a whole week, and the registration for the run was rather slack. But Saturday came, and with it lovely weather with lots of sun. Everything was ready and in perfect order on Vorobievy Gory: the route created by the organisers of the World Harmony Run global torch relay, music from Tekhnologiya Igr company, and change-room tents.

The day turned out to be great fun: smiling happy faces of children and adults, a warm and friendly atmosphere, a fantastic performance by Uventa children dancing group, tricks of Deti Marii clowns. The culmination was the opening ceremony, when the runners passed from hand to hand a flaming torch from the World Harmony Run as a symbol of goodwill. 101 participants from 4 to 55 years old took part in the race. In summary they ran 311 km in 23 hours. 205,000 rubles have been raised for Downside Up early intervention programmes.

Downside Up launched the Charity Sports® initiative in 1996. It comprises Russian Challenge Charity Ski Race, Spring and Fall Charity Football Tournaments, Red Square Charity Bike Ride and – for the first time this year – the Charity Run on Vorobievy Hills. Private individuals and companies pay a participation fee, get the gear and take part in a high-level sports event.

Our annual projects bring together people of different age, nationalities and walks of life who love sports and are willing to help children with Down syndrome. Thanks to the support provided by CHARITY SPORTS® participants, 1780 families from Moscow and 80 other Russian regions, which raise children with Down syndrome, receive FREE high quality learning and psychological assistance.
