Improving the quality of life for Russian children with Down syndrome
Express News Downside Up
October 2009
Dear Friends,

This issue is about the recent events in the life of
Downside Up Charitable Fund, Russia and the world. These events concern all people alike, with or without Down syndrome. We hope that you will also find a thing or two worth reading...

Read in this issue:

     Teachers + Non-Teachers

On 10th March Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree “On The Celebration of A Teacher’s Year in Russia”. We think it is great idea, because Downside Up Early Intervention Centre has 32 teaches on its staff. Traditionally, each year in October Downside Up graduates come to the Centre for a reunion and to celebrate A Teacher’s Day together with their former tutors. All in all as of September 2009, we have 616 graduates, and most of them attend schools.
By the way, in November Downside Up traditionally celebrates Non-Teacher’s Day to acknowledge a contribution to the common cause made by individuals of other walks of life: psychologists, fundraisers, bookkeepers and office managers.

Eva Longoria Admires People with Down syndrome

Eva Longoria, a Hollywood star, admires her sister Elizabeth who has Down syndrome. According to Eva, her sister has always set her an example for her and inspired her: “I have met many remarkable people, but none of them equals Liza. She is our family’s brightest star”.
The actress blames the society for the lack of understanding towards people with such disabilities. “Some people think that it is shameful to be mentally challenged, and that such individuals can not have normal lives. I wish such an attitude would change. The point is not what Elizabeth lacks or is unable to do, but what she has and what she can do.”
