Dear Friends,
On 2nd February 2010 the Public Board of Appeals against the Press heard an appeal against a journalist who wrote the article titled "Finish it off so it doesn’t suffer" in which he calls for euthanasia of disabled newborn children.
Valery Paniushkin, Kommersant, 5th February 2010: "…as a participant, albeit virtual, via a radio discussion, I was deeply ashamed of being involved in a discussion that put to doubt not only the children’s right to live, but also heroism of the parents who secure this right for their children."

On 30th January Russian Challenge Ski race took place. Its result was a variety of personal gains and achievements: some participants finally mastered skiing; others broke records in races, won medals, or had a great family outing in a lovely park area. Even the celestial office did its bit by arranging excellent skiing weather. With joint efforts of participants, 620 thousand roubles have been raised for Downside Up programmes. We extend our gratitude to all those who helped to minimize the cost of the event, to companies-participants, volunteers, skiers, Downside Up families and team members. Please read more about the event here. Photos are here. Our next event for corporate teams will be the In-door Football Tournament in April. To sign up, please contact Yana Yakusheva by phone 8 (499) 367-1000, or by email yanaya@downsideup.org.

The magazine Down Syndrome XXI century is the only Russian language publication for Down syndrome specialists – doctors, medical geneticists, psychologists, special teachers, labour education specialists for children and adults with Down syndrome. In February copies of this magazine will be sent to 208 addresses in Russia and former Soviet republics. Says Nataliya V. Nikitina, Head of medical and genetic consulting department, Family planning and reproduction centre, Yekaterinburg: “Our Centre’s geneticists are the first to provide medical attendance to children and to consult babies in maternity hospitals… Your remarkable publication covers all relevant topics referring to individuals with Down syndrome. It is of great value to us as an excellent instrument of information support.” The publication is sponsored by OAK Foundation, but Downside Up will have to shoulder mailing expenses. We will be grateful for your donations towards cutting the mailing costs. Ultimately, this will help to provide highly professional support to families all over Russia. Donations can be made here.

Marina - one more star among Downside Up graduates - attends dancing and musical classes at a highly popular DoMiSolka children musical theatre. Last December DoMiSolka made a performance in the State Kremlin Theatre, and Marina took part in it. Were any allowances made for her? None, said her teachers. Fast rhythm, tricky choreography…Marishka fumbled a little and missed her partner (such things happen on a crowded stage), but nonetheless she put a brave face and danced the bit on her own. We congratulate the Mashatakov family, Downside Up teachers and, most importantly, MARINA herself with the debut!

We are frequently asked if people with Down syndrome are capable of building families. We want to tell you a romantic story about the American couple Carolyn and Sujeet. Both of them have Down syndrome and both are high achievers, advocates and role models within the DS community. The young couple lives independently, having part-time support from social workers and families with their daily routines. Carolyn and Sujeet do not plan to have children: men with Down syndrome are infertile, and there is a 50 % chance that the women will have babies with Down syndrome. Carolyn and Sujeet have other plans: "We want to continue with our speeches, to continue to make a difference in this world for people with special needs, to have some fun time too. And to take care of each other. To read the whole story…
