Improving the Quality of Life for Russian Children with Down Syndrome
Downside Up Express News
In this issue:
Early Intervention Centre News

• As of March 2005 the total number of children registered with Downside Up stands at 550; 289 of them are from Moscow and Moscow region, 261 - from other regions of Russia and CIS (former Soviet Union) countries.

In 2005 cooperation with the regions will become the main area of development for Downside Up. The Downside Up Resource Centre will be open with the aim to spread information and knowledge about Down syndrome, share experience of working with children with DS, provide methodological support to the regional early intervention services. Nizhniy Novgorod and Novosibirsk will become the pilot projects: an international conference and a teaching seminar are going to be held there in autumn 2005.

Back to Kilimanjaro!

Downside Up on top of Kilimanjaro in 2000

After years of cycling in the Moscow region and crossing widely spread Russian fields and forests on skis, we felt that Downside Up should conquer mount Kilimanjaro again. We have done it three times in the past and it was a fantastic experience. We invite you to join us!
Preliminary dates of the trip are 16th to 25th September.

Detailed information as well as photos and reports from the previous climbs on our site

Charity Ski Race 2005

About 100 participants took part in the 2nd Charity Ski Race on February 12th in Bitsa. Six corporate teams - TNT Express, AIG Lincoln, The Moscow Times, KPV Stroy, Cushman & Wakefield Stiles & Riabokobylko, Deloitte and the teams of Downside Up parents and staff - competed in the 4x500 m relay race, and then the participants could choose a distance of 1km, 3km or 5km.

As a result of the Charity Ski Race we have raised over
$20 000 all of which will be directed towards rehabilitation programmes for hundreds of children with Down syndrome in the year 2005-2006.

Thank You very much!

New Home for Downside Up

The "batlle" for obtaining all the necessary permissions for the reconstruction of the New Centre building is continuing full tilt. A professional designer started working on the project in February. In cooperation with "Mir Detstva" (Childhood World) company, which specializes in children's leisure activities and production of toys and goods for the children, they will decorate our centre in a bright and colourful style. In March we signed a contract for construction work with "Stroy Building" company which allowed us to begin preparatory works.
