02.12.2009 What they say about Down syndrome: December express news

Improving the quality of life for Russian children with Down syndrome
Express News Downside Up
December 2009

Dear Friends,
It so happened that most of this issue’s materials refer to a variety of media resources ranging from international agencies to our own publications . Such media interest for Down syndrome means a lot for Russia - it is a sign of change in society’s attitudes. Read in this issue:

Read in this issue:

A record number of families – 1563 – are registered with Downside Up programmes in November 2010. 53 families joined us in October alone, including 44 from Russian regions. As before, the majority of families (84%) joined the programmes thanks to our website, and specifically, the Consultative Forum – a popular resource embracing over 600 registered users. All these figures mean that more and more babies with Down syndrome are not abandoned, but live at home with their families. Their parents know that Downside Up will help them. You can help here too, by making a donation for the early intervention programmes.
Sergey, 11, lives in Tiraspol. He has Down syndrome. Sergey has his hands full with lots of interesting things: he studies art at the art school named after Rakhmaninov, attends a weekly class in carting and a Sunday school, is interested in collecting meteorites, loves to travel and to take photos. His other interest is swimming, and he has recently won a silver medal at an international swimming competition. Sergey has sent us his drawings for our collection of Christmas cards. You can order these cards from us by making a donation. Your money will go for the early intervention programmes that help young children with Down syndrome to learn and develop, so that they can live full lives the way Sergey does. Please see the new Christmas cards samples here; Sergey’s cards are nos. 18 and 21 in our 2009 collection. And this is his self portrait.
The second issue of our publication “47=46” will see the world in December 2009 due to Deloitte’s support. This publication is circulated among all Downside Up Friends Club members and is published on our website. In this issue you will read interviews with Russian celebrities who support our Fund: Tatiana Lazareva, Tutta Larsen, Vladimir Pozner and others. If you want to help Russian children with Down syndrome, please use a Sberbank pay slip in this issue to transfer your donation to Downside Up or go to our donation page. We will be happy to present you with a commemorative Friends Club Certificate with the celebrities' autographs. If you want to receive our publication by mail, but have not yet sent us your address, please e-mail it to Ksenya Chernyavskaya at ksenya@downsideup.org.
In October “drugoi” wrote again about the “Simple-hearted” and their director Igor Neoupokoyev. Rustem Adagamov (“drugoi”) is the most popular blogger on Runet; his famous “Illustrated magazine about everything in the world” has more than 40 thousand subscribers. And yet we at Downside Up are invariably the first to learn about the news and events in the Theatre of the Simple-minded, because the theatre’s leading actress Maria Nefedova works as teacher’s assistant at Downside Up Early Intervention Centre.
On 30th January Russian Challenge charity ski race will start at Bitza Park. Each individual participant or corporate team is asked to make a charitable contribution which will go for the work of Downside Up Early Intervention Centre that supports children with Down syndrome. TNT Express company will shoulder all the expenses in connection with the ski race. The programme includes corporate teams relay, individual races for 3, 5 and 10 km, souvenirs for all skiers, entertainments for fans, hot tea and porridge from a field kitchen. Please send your requests for participation to Yana Yakusheva (yanaya@downsideup.org) and Ludmila Loboda (ludmila_l@downsideup.org), tel. 8 (499) 165-5536.
