3rd Issue of the “Down Syndrome. 21st Century”
This magazine is dedicated to people with Down syndrome – their problems, achievements and interests. It presents highly topical Russian and foreign materials on medicine, genetics, psychology, teaching practices, early intervention, labour education and social integration, as well as fostering creativity of children and adults with Down syndrome.
The third issue offers the reader a series of articles on prenatal diagnosis, testing techniques and related risks and ethical problems. There is also an article by Downside Up medical consultants - Russian specialists - describing the results of an observational study aimed at identifying the incidence and features of congenital heart disease in children with Down syndrome. The Psychology section contains an article discussing the research aimed at analysing how carers in baby houses perceive babies with Down syndrome, and how this perception affects the interaction between them. A programme of language development worked out by British specialists, and a brief survey of its theoretical basis is presented in the Pedagogy section. Another theme of this issue is a supported living system for disabled adults. The magazine contains an article about the Mexican school of Down art supplied with highly inspiring graphics. There is also an interesting material about the 10th World Down Syndrome Congress summarising the main topics of discussion and listing the names of the speakers – the world’s major specialists. The author tells us about a ground breaking initiative: the organisation on the eve of the congress of the 1st International Synod of people with Down syndrome. The Centre for Curative Pedagogics, one of Russia’s first non-government organisations, has recently celebrated its twenty years’ anniversary. The authors review the work done in the past twenty years, recall the challenges, and plan for the future. Traditionally, the magazine presents an overview of the events and new publications.
Comments
1. Eugene A. Prigozhin, Head of Health Monitoring Section, Moscow Healthcare Department
Thank you for sending us the magazine. We would be happy if you keep sending it to us in the future. I would also recommend sending it to specialised Moscow baby houses.
2. Olena Selivanova, Early Intervention Centre “Me+Family”, Kyev
International experience and practices are the matters of special importance for the specialists of our Centre, therefore they believe that the magazine’s practical aspect is its major advantage. At the same time, we are interested in learning scientists’ opinions in such spheres as genetics, psychology and pedagogy. We work with preschoolers, therefore our major interest is children’s development perspectives and adaptation potential at schools and other educational establishments. That is why we particularly appreciate the materials about inclusion of teenagers and adults in society, and fostering their creativity. We are very impressed with the publications about art education for teenagers and employment opportunities for adults. We would very much like to receive your magazine, as its subject is in full conformity with our professional requirements.
3. Nataliya Trifonova, Rehabilitation Centre APRIL for children and teenagers with special needs, Kazan
We enjoy reading your informative and substantive publication.
4. Nataliya V. Nikitina, Head of medical and genetic consulting department, Family planning and reproduction centre, Yekaterinburg
Our Centre’s geneticists are the first to provide medical attendance to children and to consult them in maternity hospitals. They closely cooperate with the Urals organisation “Sunny Children”. Your remarkable publication covers all relevant topics referring to individuals with Down syndrome. It is of great value to us as an instrument of information support.
5. Galina Melnik, teacher and psychologist, Early intervention and consultative service, Kindergarten no. 12g, Novorossiysk.
Your magazine is a great support to me and my colleagues, because it helps us to keep in touch with new tendencies in early intervention and education for children with Down syndrome, and to provide high quality assistance to families raising children with Down syndrome. Many thanks! |
