Improving the quality of life for Russian children with Down syndrome
Express News Downside Up
March 2010

Dear Friends,
21st March is the World Down Syndrome Day celebrated worldwide. In Russia only a few years ago Down syndrome remained a taboo theme. This fact makes the recent achievements all the more remarkable – Moscow kindergartens offer placements for kids with Down syndrome; the Russian language information on Down syndrome is readily available on the Internet; 600 children have joined Downside Up programmes since the summer of 2009 – the children that have not been abandoned to state institutions, but are raised at home by loving parents. On behalf of hundreds of thier families we thank all of you who helped to bring about these advances.

Nataliya Groznaya, Downside Up: “In late 1960-ies the problems of disabled individuals, which had been shamefacedly hushed up till then, became the subject for wide discussions in the media. Many believe that such public discussions were initiated by John Kennedy who openly stated that the Kennedys had a family member with Down syndrome...” Find out more.

Tatiana Yumasheva: “[My son] Gleb has Down syndrome. He is not an ordinary child. I am determined to write about my life with Gleb in more detail one day. He is very special. It is believed that Down syndrome is a disiase. But in my opinion, it is not. Children with Down syndrome are simply different. They take to heart things that we do not even notice.” Read the whole article.
There is an urgent need for funds for additional copies of the Parents’ Guide “Cognitive development in children with Down syndrome”. This publication is ready for print. With more families now enlisted on Downside Up programmes, there is a much higher demand for pedagogical literature.

The Parents’ Guide helps parents to better understand cognitive development patterns of preschoolers with Down syndrome, advises on structuring of a learning session, and offers assignments for learning at home. The guidebooks are distributed among the parents free. It is common knowledge that timeliness is an essential factor when a disabled child’s yearly development is at stake. Printing of an additional copy costs 37 rubles! To make a donation, please follow this link. Thank you!.
Every time Downside Up puts on an event, it relies on Tekhnologiya Igr for a variety of things: sound equipment, master of ceremony, entertainments or adventures. On 30th March we invite you all to their Garage Dobra party. Admission is free; for access you will need a special invitation that can be booked via contact@t-igr.ru.

And do take along some money, you may want to spend it. What on? There will be a sale of doodads, hand-made knick-knacks, artworks and priceless antiques. Blacksmiths and ceramists will make artworks to be auctioned there and then. All the funds raised during the event will benefit Downside Up early intervention programmes. And one more thing: each guest can take home a memorable souvenir – something made with his/her own hands at the Garage Dobra art classes. Find out about other surprises.

A partnership initiative between the Every Child a Chance Trust and government, the programme Every Child Counts, for schoolchildren who fall behind their peers, as well as for children with severe learning disabilities, has aroused a keen interest in Russia. On 16th February Downside Up, Moscow, ran a video seminar for 137 educators across Russia on Numicon - a multi-sensory maths teaching programme. The Numicon method is widely used in British schools for teaching numeracy to children with Down syndrome. The seminar was sponsored by OAK Foundation, Down Syndrome Educational Trust, "Таском" company, and Moscow Education Department.
The press centre of Ministry of Health and Social Affairs has announced establishment of a new department in charge of disabled persons. This new authority will, among other things, draft the state programme "Dostoupnaya Sreda" (Accessibility and Inclusion), and work on the options for Russia’s proposed transition to the international physical activity and health standards classification policy – a step towards ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Find out more.
If the answer is “yes”, please read this! On 18th April at 3pm a spring football tournament for Downside Up Cup will be held on the Dynamo arena. Thanks to the participants, 1.5 million rubles were raised in 2009 to benefit the early intervention programmes for children with Down syndrome. We will be happy to see you again! Please contact Yana Yakusheva (yanaya@downsideup.org) and Ludmila Loboda (ludmila_l@downsideup.org); (499) 367-1000, to learn all about the event.
