AN INTERVIEW WITH A STAR
The interviews were given by celebrities who participated in the international poster exhibition, a ski-race, All You Need Is Love Calendar and other Downside Up projects benefiting children with Down syndrome.
TV presenter Tatiana Lazareva: “There are problems that should not be feared or tabooed – they should be resolved. And we can help to solve them.” (In Style magazine).
|
Theatre and film actress Elena Drobysheva: “It should be admitted that life is not easy for people with Down syndrome in Russia. We tend to wave their problems aside instead of admitting and looking into them, and as a consequence, there is so little understanding and acceptance towards individuals with Down syndrome. Such attitude is inexcusable. They are people like us. Moreover, I believe that in some ways they are better –more sensitive, more sincere, and with a better understanding of life. We can learn a lot from them. I would like to hope that Downside Up awareness raising events will enlighten the uninformed and change the attitude to people with Down syndrome for the better.” (Pervoe Sentyabrya newspaper).
|
Theatre and film actress Anna Gorshkova:
“I am not much in for sports, so I had to learn how to ski right there [at Downside Up ski race]. Nevertheless I enjoyed the event. It was a lot of fun, and we could play with children with Down syndrome. As I watched the kids take snow baths, ski and sledge, my own very modest contribution to this event in their favour made me feel very happy”. (Express newspaper)
|
Theatre and film actress Anna Terekhova:
”I left the event with my soul cleansed. Communicating with people with Down syndrome is an uplifting experience. They want your affection, tenderness and love and they give a lot of love in return. The men are very cloak-and-sword and kiss ladies’ hands, the kids adore kissing…I cannot remember when I was last treated with such warmth! Stage fright before the performance [together with children with Down syndrome] was very intense – it was a much bigger challenge than playing in a theatrical. I look forward to further cooperation and will do my best to help [Downside Up]. I wish there were more events like this, and I believe there should be more awareness in respect of the people who live in a world of their own, but, none the less, need our kindness, affection and, most of all, love. And these people make us better human beings”. (Miloserdie.ru website)
|
TV presenter Vladimir Pozner:
“Why people with Down syndrome are treated in Russia as if they were subhuman is totally beyond understanding. I do believe that every “normal” person should support them and all other people who need help. This is very important for me”. (TV Channel 1)
Tennis player Anastasia Myskina:
“Such projects [All you Need Is Love, a calendar featuring Russian celebrities with children with Down syndrome] are highly encouraging. Meeting these wonderful kids was a genuinely invigorating experience. I hope they enjoyed it as much as we did!” (In Style magazine).

|
Theatre and film actress Lubov Rudenko:
“I support Downside Up. For me charity is a chance to do what I can for a certain individual or company. In case of Downside Up, I have seen with my own eyes positive results of our cooperation” (Yakutiya newspaper).
|
Actor and TV presenter Nikolai Fomenko: “We should all relax and be ourselves. It will make us kinder and more open. This is a path to human perfection. My cheers to all the boys and girls who participated in All You Need Is Love project! I have enjoyed their company”. (Channel 1)

In Style Magazine Senior Editor Yurate Gurauskaite: ”Originally the In Style May issue was to be quite different. Not better or worse, just different. The entirely new concept was due to Vladimir Mishukov’s project [All you Need Is Love] benefiting Russian children with Down syndrome. We saw the photos and realized that we must publish them by all means. It was one of these situations when all of a sudden you have a very clear vision of what you must do at a certain moment. So, finally, the whole issue was rehashed – our apologies to the “deferred“ heroes. The result was worth all the trouble. Such sincerity, ingenuousness and vulnerability are rare in glossy magazines. As a rule, photo-sessions look rather artificial in glossies, but not in this case. You could feel the atmosphere of earnestness, kindness, and love enveloping the children and grownups – our well-known and highly respected countrymen. “My primary intention was to support the parents who, despite doctors’ advice to terminate pregnancy, have brought these children into the world and accepted them. I hope that the time will soon come when the parents will stop feeling shy of them. Being shy of another individual is wrong. Everyone needs love, and these children need it more than anybody else”, says the project’s author. These words alone would be worth rehashing the issue”. (In Style Editor’s column)

Photographer Vladimir Mishukov: “All You Need Is Love project was a strenuous one for me, despite its seaming ease. Two years ago in October an invitation came from Downside Up Charitable Fund to make the calendar. I willingly accepted it. I had by then assimilated the Down syndrome definition which I had come across in Alphabet Magazine some time before. “These people are called “mentally retarded” in my country,” a girl wrote, “while in other countries they are known as “mentally different”. The only thing that I was uneasy about was the proposed format – a calendar with celebrities. My own idea was to make plain black-and-white photos of children with their parents. So I took a timeout to give it a thought. In the meantime we had a son, Platon. Platon has Down syndrome. His birth accelerated my thinking. It sort of brought home that I am the one who must make these photos, because it is my theme now, and All You Need Is Love is primarily a message for parents. (Photodelo Magazine)
